So my trip to Cross Fit Sanctuary a new gym in New Hyde, New York… was an eye opener for several reasons. 1.) I miss having a personal trainer! 2.) I’m clearly not working out very hard when I go to the gym! 3.) A good workout can happen in a mere 30 minutes and it’s amazing!!

Sanctuary, by definition, is a sacred place and/or a safe haven….

Cross Fit Sanctuary is a safe haven because of the individuals who followed their vision to make this a reality……Providing clients elite fitness translates to an improvement in one’s quality of life…Some of the owners and employees the day of the “Grand Opening” Bernard Henry, Ann Feldstein, Eddy Emmanuel, and Laura Oppenheimer. 

Bernie has had this vision for quite some time!! There is nothing more inspiring than  seeing  someone stay true to themselves and their dreams..

The WOD…”Workout Of The Day”….yes this is where it begins! The clients check out what their 30 minutes will look like!  A warm-up of rowing or running and then the real work begins….box jumps, push-ups, pull-ups, kettle balls, medicine balls, lateral jumps…and so much more!!

On the day of the grand opening the first “WOD” was for the kids!!

Cross Fit Sanctuary is a family oriented environment .. soon they will be hosting cross fit classes for kids on a regular basis!! The kids doing “The Crab Walk”

After the workout, there was also a host of competitions. Sit-ups, pull-ups, and burpees! Even though my girl Leslie came to the workout looking all “fly” she still decided to get in on the action. Every burpee completed by all competitors equated to a dollar donated to Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer 🙂 What’s more impressive about this photo is the fact that the woman to Leslie’s left, Keri MacFarlane,  is currently battling Breast Cancer. Even though this is a difficult time for Keri,  she came out to support her friends and share her strength.

Because the day was all about celebration and new beginnings, no better way to wrap up the day…yes cake my friends!! A delicious red velvet!! Sweets make every party better!!

This blog is dedicated to Keri MacFarlane and her battle with breast cancer. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but the effort to find a cure is year round.  When I see the Pink Ribbon, I see the power of  positive thinking and how it benefits our bodies. Pink means Positive!!!

There will be special benefit for the costs involved with Keri’s treatment on Friday November 9th at Cross Fit Sanctuary. There will be raffles, 50/50, and a special WOD’s for the day to benefit Keri.

Hearty Salad!!!

This was the salad  served at the grand opening. It is very similar to one Leslie’s mother makes and I love it!! Here is Pat G’s version!! Because of the nuts and dried fruit, this is a very filling salad!!


– 1 bag of field greens

– 1 bag of romaine lettuce

– 1 cup of craisins  (dried cranberries)

– 1 cup walnuts

– 1 cup blue cheese crumbed

– 1 thinly sliced red vidalia onion

– 1 diced cucumber ( make slices and then cut into quarters)

– a good balsamic vinaigrette..spend the money on the good stuff


1. Mix the bags of field greens and the romaine lettuce together in a large bowl.

2. With large wooden spoons, toss the lettuce with the craisins, walnuts, blue cheese, onions, and cucumbers.

3. Lightly and I mean lightly drizzle the salad with the balsamic vinaigrette and toss again. You don’t want the salad to be overwhelmed with the salad dressing.

4. I like to serve my salads with a nice crusty piece of garlic bread or garlic pita chips
