Spending time with my friend Shelly for the 4th of July was delightful. Took the kids to a cool water park Sahara Sam’s, Shelly’s husband did the cooking which translates to…Jen took a break, and we endured parking lot style traffic to get the kids to some fireworks; yes two hours of traffic for 20 minutes dazzling lights. But hands down my friends, the most interesting piece to our day,  The Annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Contest!! So.. Joey “Jaws” Chestnut and Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas were the winners for the day. Joey has now won 7 straight titles with his “Mustard Belt”.  Joey scarfed down 69 hot dogs in 10 minutes and Sonya 36 wieners. As the family gathered around to watch the boxing match style entrance that took place in Coney Island, Brooklyn; we were blown away by the crowd as well as the extensive ESPN coverage. Let’s talk about the fascination we had viewing the pre-game feature ESPN did on Joey Chestnut. Full of.. deep stares into the camera,  shadows over his face, and a dramatic voice lay over. Riveting. Clearly, there is a level of competition exists with this whole “food eating contest culture” that eludes me. None of us could figure out exactly the details of training for an event of the nature. As a result,  Shelly and I made the decision one of our children should consider training for this event next year. Not one of them was down with our program. Shucks….

The children graciously did a hot dog photo shoot….

Ok…three of the four children don’t eat hot dogs

…..Still forcing the children to take a bite…at this point I knew the children were not going to be competing in any food competition..Ever!!!

Check out Joey Chestnut!!! Wow

Coney Island Dogs…my version 🙂

Coney Dogs are grilled dogs, on a grilled roll, topped with a beanless

chili (traditionally prepared with beef hearts), yellow mustard, and oinons.

Apparently, cheese is a debate.

– 1 lb beef hot dogs (I used Nathan’s)

– Potato Rolls

– 1/2 lb ground beef

– 1 chopped white onion

– 1 can tomato paste

-1/2 tsp garlic salt

-1/2 tsp chili powder

– 1/2 tsp cumin

-1/2 tsp pepper

-1/2 tsp salt

Grill hot dogs set aside, brown meat ( do not use the beef hearts) , add paste and spices allow to

simmer. Toast rolls in oven. Assemble hot dogs top with chili first, then

mustard, and finally onions.
